It's presence is rather like the Taj Mahal -surreal! I found it an odd sensation climbing the tower with it leaning to one side and I was a bit anxious coming down as someone held the qué up and did pull over in the passing point, I should have just politely requested they did instead of suffering in silence. There is also an open air market selling tacky things but the shops are quaint and authentic (this is tucked away over the back) the tower itself is really impressive and the impact when you walk round the corner gives you goosebumps. We booked tickets well in advance to get the times we wanted and visited all the sites offerings so made our visit feel worth it. The site is a short 20 minutes walk from the train station with a few bars and restaurants on route and nice scenery with river.
Due to instability conditions the building was shut off in 1990 and after taking. In addition to that the city of Italy has a high ground water level which further worsened the condition. We got the train from Bologna (changing at Florence). The Leaning Tower of Pisa, one of the seven wonders of the world faced instability and started inclining due to bad engineering and weak soil profile. A must experience if your staying nearby in Bologna (as we were) or Florence.
